Prototype information

The British Rail Class 20 was the only truly successful Class 1 diesel locomotive. They widely replaced steam engines in branchline and light freight service, and were later often found working in pairs on coal trains. More recently, they found work hauling nuclear flask trains.

Similar locomotives

There were a number of less-successful Type 1 diesels, Classes 15, 16 and 17, many of which were withdrawn within a decade of introduction.
