Prototype information

These locomotives, later known as BR class 76, were ordered by H.N.Gresley for work on the Woodhead 1500v DC line. Only one prototype was completed before the Second World War saw such experiments put on hold. Full-scale production of EM1, and later EM2, locomotives did not begin until the 1950s.
