[edit] Prototype information
The Class 66, adapted and standardised from the earlier Class 59 (The first post-BR locomotives in the UK), has become the defacto standard locomotive for British freight operators in the early 20th Century. So successful has it proved that EMD now sells the Class 66 across Europe and North Africa as well.[edit] Similar locomotives
The Class 67 has the same drivetrain (engine and generator set) as the Class 66. The Class 70 is a recent similar heavy freight locomotive built by GE.
