The British Rail Class 73 is a fast freight and passenger locomotive introduced to work alongside the Southern Region 3rd rail EMUs. Its primary power source is the 3rd rail, but it also carries a small diesel engine to allow access to unelectrified areas.

The larger BR Type HA was also rebuilt into an electro-diesel version, the British Rail Class 74.
