Thomas Russell Crampton's locomotives had their driving wheel behind the firebox, and a low-slung boiler giving a low centre of gravity. This allowed for a high top speed, but limited tractive effort somewhat.

His locomotives were only somewhat successful in his native Britain, but in France "Crampton" became a synonym for express train.
