The Johnson 115 "Spinner" Class of the Midland Railway is typical of late 19th century express locomotives. Single driving wheel designs were free-wheeling and fast as they had fewer bearings than coupled locomotives, but tractive effort was low.

Similar locomotives of the same era include the GNR Stirling Single and the GWR Dean Single.
