The production of the Airbus 320 was startet after the succesful Airbus 300. The A320 was aimed for the market of mid-size aircrafts, which was widely served by Boeings 727 and 737 at that time. Today the A320 is overall built in 4 models; the A318, A319, A320 and 321 with a pax capacity spanning from 107 to 220, direct in competition with the 4 variants of Boeings 737NG.
