[edit] Information
The long-range Airbus A340 was launched as a complement to the short-range A320 and the medium-range A300.
It was the first 4-engine Airbus and the first able to fly long over-sea routes, closed to twin-engine aircraft by international rules (ETOPS). With the relaxing of ETOPS in recent years, the more efficient twin-engine Airbus A330 has proved more popular.
