Robinson's 8K class was a powerful, well-designed freight hauler. Adopted by the Royal Engineers as their standard locomotive during WWI, over 600 were built, and war-surplus locomotives were later used all over the UK, as well as being exported to China and Australia.

In UKRS3, the 8K is best suited to heavy freight drags of mineral trucks or other low-speed wagons, where its own low top speed is not such a disadvantage.

Replacement

The 8K has the highest tractive effort of any locomotive until it is supplanted by the Stanier 8F in 1935.
