The long-range Airbus A340 was launched as a suppliment to the short-range [[Airbus A320|A320]] and the medium-range [[Airbus A300|A300]].

It was the first 4-engine Airbus aircraft and therefore also the first Airbus which was able to fly longhaul over-sea routes. At the launch of the A340, international rules (ETOPS) prohibited twin-engine aircrafts from flying such routes.
